Argue and Fay make it through in Cavan-Belturbet

Madeleine Argue (FG) and Brendan Fay (Ind) have both been elected on the fifth count for Cavan-Belturbet. Thanks to transfers from Emmett Smith (S-PBP) they join John Paul Feeley (FF), who was elected last night on the first count.

There's just 170 votes separating the four remaining candidates battling for the last three seats.
Patricia Walsh and Sean Smith are the slightly more comfortable of the quartet with 1176 and 1174 respectively. Then come Peter McVitty (FG) on 1039 and Damien Brady (SF) 1006 with just 33 votes between them.
It looks as if Liam Van Der Spek's transfers (Lab) will be the kingmaker as count 6 will see his 761 votes redistributed. Patricia Walsh got 63 of Emmett Smith's 567 transfers, and will hope that the Cavan Town based Van Der Spek's support will likewise send votes in her direction.
Despite Fine Gael supporters claiming Peter McVitty is transfer friendly, he has only enjoyed any significant number of transfers (53) from the second count with the redistribution of Sean McKiernan's vote. Since then he's got 32 in counts 3, 4 and 5 combined. Is he likely to get many more from a Labour candidate?
After the first count Sean Smith had looked comfortable sitting on 1114, but has budged very little since, increasing his total haul by just 60 after count 5.
Seemingly on the verge of going out after the first count, Damien Brady has enjoyed great momentum in recent counts, gathering 193 from his running mate Downey and 84 from Emmett Smith. Will the vote coming from a Labour candidate opt to stay with the left of the political spectrum and see the Ballyconnell man save Sinn Féin blushes? Count 6 and the distribution of Liam Van Der Spek's 761 votes is coming up - stay tuned...
