Hyland names five debutants for Championship opener

Teamsheet ahead of Sunday's match Cavan V Donegal

Five players will make their Championship debut when Cavan take to the field against Donegal this Sunday, while injury worry Gearoid McKiernan makes a surprise appearance on the starting team.

McKiernan's return to the side is a real boost to the squad facing the reigning Ulster Champions.

Cavan PRO Declan Woods says that McKiernan has been fighting hard to be for the occasion.

Having been promoted from the successful U21s, McKiernan quickly established himself as an essential member of the senior panel and was one of the best performers during the team's poor run in the league until he suffered an ankle injury against Offaly. McKiernan will be seriously lacking in match practice, but clearly manager Terry Hyland, in selecting his first team, felt his value to the team outweighs the risk.

The team named sees keeper James Reilly return to the Championship after missing last year. The fullback line of Padraic O Reilly, Damien Reilly and Ronan Flanagan are all tried and tested, however there are two debutantes in the half back line with Kevin Meehan and Robert Maloney-Derham.
