Hot day ahead amid heatwave conditions
Weather update from Met Éireann
Residents across Cavan and Monaghan can look forward to several days of sunshine and soaring temperatures, with forecasters predicting highs of up to 28°C today (Wednesday) and the mercury climbing close to 30°C by the weekend.
After a cloudy start in some western and northwestern areas, any lingering mist, fog and low cloud will quickly clear this morning, giving way to widespread sunshine across both counties.
Cavan and Monaghan are expected to enjoy another very warm day, with inland areas likely to reach between 24°C and 27°C during the afternoon. Coastal counties will remain slightly cooler, but the north Midlands are expected to bask in prolonged spells of sunshine.
Conditions will remain dry into Wednesday night, with temperatures only falling to between 12°C and 16°C. It will be another warm and humid night, although patches of mist and fog may develop locally by dawn.
Thursday is set to bring more of the same, with near-calm conditions allowing temperatures to rise once again. Any early morning cloud or mist will soon clear, leaving long spells of sunshine and afternoon highs of between 24°C and 28°C across the region.
The hot spell is then expected to intensify as the week progresses.
Friday could see temperatures approaching 30°C in parts of the country, with inland counties such as Cavan among those likely to experience some of the highest readings. While Monaghan may be marginally cooler at times, both counties are expected to remain dry with hazy sunshine and only isolated showers well to the northwest.
The settled conditions are forecast to continue into the weekend, with Saturday bringing further sunshine and temperatures ranging from the high twenties locally to around 30°C in the warmest parts of the country. Sunday is also expected to remain dry and sunny, with very warm conditions continuing after another humid night.
Looking ahead to early next week, forecasters say the current spell of settled weather is set to persist. Blue skies, abundant sunshine and unusually warm nights are promised, with an easterly breeze keeping eastern coastal areas slightly cooler while inland counties, including Cavan and Monaghan, continue to experience some of the highest temperatures.
With several consecutive days of temperatures in the mid to high twenties forecast, the current spell is shaping up to be one of the warmest periods of the summer to date.
