Funeral takes place of Cavan priest
The funeral has taken place of the late Monsignor Michael Cooke.
In his 86th year, he passed away peacefully at home at Meadow Park, Cavan Town, surrounded by family.
Educated at De La Salle National School, Cavan, before attending St Patrick’s College, and later St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, where he studied for the priesthood, Mons Cooke was ordained to the priesthood in Cavan Cathedral on June 20, 1965.
Following ordination, Mons Cooke began his ministry as Curate in Drumlease in August 1965. In June 1968, he was appointed Curate in Kilmainhamwood, before moving to Ballinagh in August 1971. In August 1986, he was appointed Curate in Crosserlough, where he ministered for a number of years.
In September 1995, Mons Cooke was appointed Parish Priest of Drumlease, and three years later (August 1998), he became Parish Priest and Vicar Forane of Killasnett–Manorhamilton.
In August 2008, he was appointed P.F. and V.G. of Belturbet, where he continued his dedicated pastoral service before retiring from active ministry in August 2015.
Even in retirement, Mons Cooke continued to serve the Church, and was appointed Director of the Diaconate Programme in September 2016.
The Kilmore Diocese website says: “Throughout his life and ministry, Monsignor Michael was known for his commitment, pastoral care, and faithful dedication to the priesthood.”
Mons Cooke's Funeral Mass took place last Tuesday, May 19, at the Cathedral of Ss Patrick and Felim in Cavan Town, followed by burial in the family plot in St Bridget’s Cemetery, Killygarry.
Predeceased by his parents Edward and Johanna, brother Liam, brother in law Tommy, sisters in law Margaret and Mary, he is sadly missed by his sister Anna May and brother Eamon, long time housekeeper and best friend Cáit, Bishop Martin Hayes, Bishop Emeritus Leo O’Reilly, fellow priests, his wide circle of family and many friends.
