Cavan vigil to remember Ashling Murphy

The country remains in a state of shock after Wednesday's senseless killing.

A evening vigil will take place in Cavan Town later today (Friday 14) to remember young school teacher and musician Ashling Murphy who was brutally killed earlier this week.

The candle lit vigil will take place at at Market Square in Cavan Town to honour the memory of the young woman who went for a run and was killed in an horrific attack in Tullamore on Wednesday.

Participants are asked to bring a candle if they can.

The event, starting at 7.30pm, is beingorganised by Jade Farrelly, and with the number of Covid cases so high in the community, attendees are asked to please respect social distancing and wear a mask.

A walk meanwhile in memory of Ashling Murphy will be held on Sunday, January 16, starting at 10am, at Erica's Fairy Forest.

In neighbouring Co Monaghan a vigil will be held at the the Diamond in Clones, starting at 7.30pm, and in front of Hope Castle, Castleblayney at 4.30pm. Another will be held in Scotstown at 6.15pm, and in Ballybay Town Park at 4.30pm.

In Kells in Meath a walk has been organised to take place on Friday starting at the Park Ri car park, to walk the ring road coming back in the Oldcastle Road. People are asked to bring lights.

Ashling was a teacher in a local primary school, and was attacked along the Grand Canal towpath near Boland’s Lock at around 4pm yesterday.

It’s understood another woman jogger came across the assault and raised the alarm at a nearby house.

A man in his 40s who was arrested a short time after the assault has since been released without charge. He is no longer considered a suspect in the killing.

Investigating Gardaí meanwhile are renewing their appeal for information on a Falcon Storm mountain bike with straight handlebars and distinctive yellow/ green front forks.

They are also appealing to anyone who was in the Cappincur/ Canal walk area of Tullamore, County Offaly before 4pm, on Wednesday, 12th January 2022, to make contact with them.
